Television Effects on Children

Watching television is on of America's favorite past times. People watch TV to relax, when they are bored and need entertainment, and when they want distraction. Watch TV every once and a while is not a problem; however it starts to affect people's quality of life when they become addicted. Family relationships can be weakened, children's education can be effected, and violence can be promoted.
Many children run to the televisison as soon as they get out of school, and sit in front of it for hours. They become obsorbed in the shows and do not communicate with family members. Many of times parents enjoy the peace and quiet in their homes because they do not have to be bothered by their children and listen to them complain and cry. Parents may think that that TV may not be the best "baby-sitter" for their kids, but they enjoy having time for themselves. However, many parents do not realize the extent of harm that TV can do to their children as well as their family as a whole.
Because children and parents do not communicate while they are watching TV their relationships weaken. They do not invest time as much time with eachother bulding stringer relationships. Instead children watch shows that promote violence, and disrespect. Not all shows are bad, but these days television is full of crude and inappropriate behavior, which is clearly not the best for children. Also children get addictied to TV and slack on their schoolwork. TV can directly affect their education.
Instead of laying on the couch watching TV, children could be doing many other productive activities such as reading a book or playing outside and being active.
Parents need to be more aware of how much their children watch TV. They should expose their children to more productive activities that will benefit thier children.
