SMU = Cocky?

When I tell people that I go to SMU, I often hear, "Oh that's the rich school." SMU has the stereotype of being a school full of rich people that come from wealthy families. Also I have heard many people say that SMU is full of snobby people, who frequently flaunt their money. I admit that their are many people who are ballin', but not everyone is cocky.

When I walk around campus, money is everywhere in sight at SMU. Almost every parking spot has a Mercedes, BMW or Lexus. Girls walk around with designer purses, wearing expensive clothes. It is apparent that SMU is a rich campus. However, not every student's family owns a huge cooperate business. There are just as many people that are not wealthy and have an average family income. You do not have to be rich to fit in at SMU. I do not feel like I have to have the latest coach bag or knew channel sunglasses. It isn't a competition. No one really cares if you have a lot of money or not.

I fit into the not so rich category of SMU. Some of my friends have a lot of money and some do not. It really is not that big of an issue. If they are wealthy, they do not flaunt it and are definitely not cocky. I would never know just by hanging out with them that they were rich. A lot of people are very modest and humble about their wealth. I only notice when they make a nice gesture like paying the bill at dinner. I have met and made friends with some of the nicest and most genuine people, who are rich. It is not fair label SMU as cocky, because most people are not.

I'm not sure if I agree with you here. While their are people here with wealth who do not openly flaunt it, thats not usually the case. Just the fact that everyone walks around in expensive designer clothing shows that materialism is a big factor at SMU. Also, just about every car I see parked in SMU parking garages is way above the average American's pay grade. So yes, I do think that SMU is a little cocky, but it's not unbearable.

the final paper we were assigned this semester is about the assets a writer must have. What you lack in this post i feel is open-mindedness. IT was a good post, and yes a lot of what you said was true. But you need to realize that just because the friends you have arent cocky, that doesnt mean that the other 10,000 here arent. I have friends who are middle class, and those who are upper class, and they all act differently. I tried to wonder why they did, but i began to notice that the upper class friends thought that the world evolved around them. IT was pretty sad, and i knew that was why people felt the way they do about this school... SOUTHERN MILLIONAIRES UNIVERSITY....Obviously we dont want to go to a school with a negative stereotype, but we do. We can't just assume that they are jealous, but we need direct opinions from those who attend other colleges. I'm sure if you were to listen to their reasons, you will see why they think the way they do about our school.

I agree with some of what beast said. Yes, I think that much of your post is about your perspective, but I also think that's an important aspect when writing on YOUR blog. I know what you are talking about because many of my hometown friends didnt go to SMU, and think its just a fluffy school that is full of snobs. I dont think they would understand and come here how nice and sincere many of the people are. Sure most of SMU is wealthy, but that doesnt mean they are greedy or mean. Also, just because you can afford expensive things does mean you are flaunting it. Most people here are more than happy to be friends with anyone not based on their financial status.
